Program Description

The saying “It’s a marathon, not a sprint,” has been applied to many endeavors – and it certainly fits in planned giving. It takes time to find and cultivate donors, build the trust necessary with them and their advisors to explore their personal and philanthropic goals, introduce and develop solutions, and put those plans in place.

While out on the trail one day, our presenter was thinking about what distance training advice he’d give his son as he contemplated his first marathon. Then the lightbulb went on that a lot of this applies to our work in planned giving. This presentation is the result of that thought process.

Using a little bit different lens, we’ll take a look at the essential program and personal qualities that will help you grow your organization’s planned giving efforts and your donor outreach efforts for the long run.

 Meet Our Presenter

Having recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest to be near family, John Koch is the Senior Director of Legacy and Gift Planning at Seattle Children's. He leads the team of gift planning professionals there and works closely with development colleagues to support the Seattle Children’s hospital, research institute and clinics and facilities across the Washington-Alaska-Montana-Idaho (WAMI) region.

He describes his planned giving work as: working with generous people to support a great cause. And this fits… John has been amazed and inspired by how many families he’s already met whose lives have been touched by Seattle Children’s, where they truly live the “HOPE. CARE. CURE.” motto.

With a long track record of successful planned giving work in higher ed, healthcare and consulting, John has developed long-term donor and advisor relationships and grown planned giving programs by successfully cultivating and closing both straight-forward and complex gifts. The first portion of his career was spent in financial services and charitable remainder trust and retirement plan administration work, which all provided a great foundation to the philanthropic work.

John earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Sacramento State.  He is a current member, as well as a past board member and president, of the Planned Giving Forum of Greater Sacramento and a member of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and also a new member of the Washington Planned Giving Council and Seattle Philanthropic Advisor Network (SPAN).

Outside of work, as a husband, father and grandfather, John enjoys spending time with his wife (Ione), and family, being outdoors and exploring the area, and always rooting for the Giants, Niners and Kings. He is a 12-time finisher of the California International Marathon and a two-time finisher of the American River 50-Mile Endurance Run.
